An eight-attorney law firm in Central Florida · Legal Services · November 14, 2025
A mid-sized law firm was running everything on a dying Dell PowerEdge that had already thrown two disk warnings. Their previous provider quoted a $28,000 hardware refresh. They asked us for a second opinion.
Eight attorneys, one aging Dell PowerEdge, the entire document store and practice-management database on it, QuickBooks in the same room, two SMART disk warnings inside the same quarter, and a $28,000 hardware refresh quote sitting on the managing partner's desk. That was Tuesday. They called us Wednesday.
We proposed replacing the hardware refresh with Azure. An OPEX subscription and consumption-based storage instead of a capital purchase that would depreciate for five years. Friday night through Sunday afternoon, we provisioned a locked-down resource group, migrated the SQL Server workload to Azure SQL Managed Instance, moved the shared drives to Azure Files with cached sync so partners still saw a local drive letter, cut over QuickBooks to a hosted instance, and rolled a fresh baseline image to every workstation before staff arrived Monday.
Every attorney logged in Monday morning to the same drive letters, the same practice-management app, and the same email. With no idea the entire back-end had moved 900 miles overnight. Monthly infrastructure cost came in lower than the depreciation schedule on the proposed hardware. And there was no server room fan noise anymore, which we're told the associates appreciated.
